What's That Squiggle in Our Logo?
by Wayne Strider

The squiggle in our logo is a stylized graph of Virginia Satir's Change Model. Virginia Satir was a family therapist and trainer of other therapists. Her systems approach to working with families was innovative in the 1960's and is widely accepted today. Her change model is one of many tools she invented to enhance communication and encourage growth. She assisted hundreds of families make the changes they wanted to make. Her original model of change had four stages:

  1. Late Status Quo
  2. Chaos
  3. Practice and Integration
  4. New Status Quo

Two other parts of the model, though not really stages, are

  5. Foreign element: Something that upsets the balance of Late Status Quo
  6. Transforming idea: A way out of chaos toward Practice and Integration
Look at the figure below. You may see where we got the idea for our squiggle. For the word performance, you could substitute energy, emotion, or productivity.
Chart

We use our understanding of this model (and other models) in working with our clients. We believe Virginia Satir's model best explains what happens to individuals and organizations during a change process. The model is universal, yet the experience of it is uniquely individual.
